These examples again point out how positive influence can be fairly easy, and suggest that tricking an intoxicated person might be a more effective method of positive influence than other coercive methods, which can lead to stubborn refusals of help.

One of our first-year URI students recounted an incident that happened when he was in high school:

When he told me he was going to “tag” the side of the school … I laughed at him, thinking he wouldn’t do that. After school … I couldn’t find Fred anywhere. Little did I know, he was on the side of the school building, with a few cans of paint … He shook the can, pointed it to the wall, and was ready to spray. Just then, I put my acting skills to the test and yelled, “Get out! A teacher is coming!”

This attempt at positive influence was effective, as the respondent and “Fred” ran away without committing the crime.
